Open Tent's mission is to promote understanding and appreciation of Middle Eastern cultures and faith traditions, and to engender mutual respect, harmony, cooperation and a sense of shared heritage among people of Middle Eastern backgrounds. Open Tent espouses principles of freedom, justice, human rights and self-representation for all people. Open Tent functions as an umbrella organization through which various organizations, individuals or entities may collectively coordinate, sponsor and support educational activities and cultural events designed to further the mission of Open Tent and the respective missions of the participants. Open Tent seeks to address issues and conflicts pertaining to the Middle East and its peoples in a manner which incorporates academic scholarship as well as the lived experience of individuals and groups. Open Tent seeks to avoid partisanship, parochial viewpoints and policies that violate the principles enumerated above. This approach may involve the deconstruction of received wisdom on a given topic, and dissatisfaction with prevailing policies of governments and agencies with respect to the Middle East.
